When documenting underground club culture, I became increasingly more interested in photographing the audience. Like any art form, whether film, music, or performance, the way in which the audience engage with the work is integral to the process. In the context of club culture, this is particularly evident. A DJ playing to an empty room is a diminished experience.
Listen, focuses on the audience by placing them at the forefront. Layered onto each photograph is a laser-cut of a grid. This grid is generated from drum patterns found in dance music. These patterns are coded into the work following a mathematical sequence, with each hole representing a different sound. Behind the image lies a reflective surface, emphasising viewer participation.
As you move around the work, the light shifts, and changes. This quality encourages viewers to engage interactively, allowing their perspective to alter the visual content of the work. In this way, Listen mirrors the club experience, where the audience is not just an observer but an active part of the process.
